Public bathhouse in Chișinău: how Dragon works, what a visit costs, house rules and Men’s Day

A public bathhouse is one you visit without renting the whole complex: alone, as a couple or with a small group, while other guests steam nearby. In Chișinău this format has almost disappeared: the old city baths closed or turned into hourly saunas, and private bath complexes are rented as a whole. Woloshin banya still has a public format — the underground bath Dragon for 24 guests with two steam rooms, a wild-stone pond and a kitchen. A visit lasts 5 hours and costs from 1200 MDL including one treatment. Below: how it works, what it costs and what the house rules are.
What “public bath” means today
The words bring up the image of a Soviet city bathhouse: a shared hall, tin basins, a queue on Thursdays. Dragon has exactly one thing in common with that — you do not rent the space and you come at your own time alongside other guests. Everything else is closer to a spa: the number of guests is limited (up to 24 at a time), everyone has their own locker and robe, the steam rooms are heated for opening, steam masters look after the steam, treatments are by appointment, and food is brought from the kitchen to your table by the pond. Men and women steam together in swimwear, as in European thermal baths.

What a visit to the public bath costs
Every package includes 5 hours in Dragon, both steam rooms, the pond, the lounge, tea, water, a towel, a sheet, slippers, a bath hat and a robe. They differ in the number of treatments you choose: oak-whisk steaming, a 30-minute classic massage, a scrub or a soap-and-lime-bark wash.

How the visit goes: 5 hours step by step
- Arrival; the administrator hands you a locker, robe, towel, slippers and hat. All you bring is a swimsuit.
- A warm shower, then a first short round in the steam room without whisks (10–15 minutes) so the body adjusts.
- Rest by the pond, water or herbal tea. Then alternate steam room and pond contrast, 3–5 rounds.
- Treatments from your package by appointment: the steam master whisks you in the steam room, the masseur works in the lounge.
- Food whenever you like — order with the administrator, it is brought to your table.
- The last hour is for quiet rounds and rest; after a massage you do not go back into the steam.
House rules of the public bath
- Swimwear is compulsory, and so is a bath hat in the steam room (it is included and protects the head from overheating).
- Shower before the first steam-room round and before the pond.
- In the steam room nobody pours water on the stones without the master, and nobody talks loudly — the steam is shared.
- No outside food or alcohol; the kitchen and bar work throughout the visit.
- Age 14 and up. Families with children are better off in the private Stejar, Valhalla and Forest: children under 12 are free there.
- A booking is confirmed with a 50 % deposit; rescheduling at least 120 hours (5 days) before the visit.
- Thursday is the sanitary day: the bath is closed during the day, and Men’s Day runs in the evening.
Men’s Day on Thursdays
Every Thursday from 18:00 to 23:00 Dragon is open to men only — the closest thing to the classic bathhouse tradition: company, heat, whisking with the masters, a hard cold plunge, conversation at the table. It costs 1700 MDL per person for five hours. People come alone and in groups of up to 18; book ahead, because Thursdays fill up first. There is currently no regular women’s evening in the public format: for women’s groups and hen parties we put together a program in the private complexes on request.
When a private bath is the better choice
If there are more than 6–8 of you, you are celebrating, or you simply do not want strangers in the steam room, take a private complex. Stejar for 2–12 guests, with a wood-fired oak steam room and the Seven Wonders program, costs from 10 000 MDL per party for 5 hours; Valhalla for 2–6 guests is from 4000 MDL for 4 hours. The public Dragon is cheaper per person, and for one or two people it is the only option that does not make you pay for empty seats. All formats are compared in “Sauna in Chișinău: what to choose”.
Getting here and booking
The complex is in Durlești on the western edge of Chișinău, next to the Golden Park residential complex; by car from the centre it is 20–25 minutes via Buiucani, with free guarded parking.
