Turkish hammam in Chișinău: what it is, how it differs from a Russian banya and where to get a foam massage
· 7 min read

A hammam is a Turkish bath with warm, humid air at 40–50 °C, a marble slab, peeling with a rough kese mitt and a massage under a cloud of soap foam. It is the gentlest of the “hot” formats: nobody whisks you with birch branches or sends you into an ice tub; you warm up slowly and then hand your body over to the attendant. In Chișinău a genuine hammam is rare — usually it is a small warm room inside a hotel spa. Woloshin banya has no hammam, and we say so plainly on the phone. What we do have is what people usually go to a hammam for: a soap-and-lime-bark wash, kese peeling, a scrub, honey steaming and a warm herbal tub. Below: how a hammam works, how it differs from a Russian banya, and how to build a “hammam visit” with us.
How a hammam works
The classic Turkish hammam descends from Roman thermae. A guest passes through several rooms: a cool entrance hall for undressing and tea, a warm transitional room and the main hot hall with a large heated marble slab in the centre, where you lie and warm up for 15–30 minutes. The heat comes from the heated floor and walls; the air is saturated with steam to almost 100 % humidity, but the temperature is low, so you can spend an hour without overheating. Then the attendant (tellak) peels your skin with a kese mitt, removing the dead layer, and covers the body in foam from natural soap for a soap massage. The visit ends with warm water poured over you and rest with tea.
Hammam, Russian banya and sauna compared
| Hammam | Russian banya | Finnish sauna | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Temperature | 40–50 °C | 60–80 °C | 80–100 °C |
| Humidity | ≈100 % | 40–70 % | 10–20 % |
| Heat source | warm marble and floor | stove, steam off the stones | stove, dry air |
| Main treatment | kese peeling + foam massage | whisk steaming + contrast | short sessions + pool |
| One session | 30–60 minutes | 5–15 minutes, several rounds | 10–15 minutes |
| Who it suits | those who dislike intense heat and want skin care | those who want deep heat and a “reset” | those who want to warm up fast |
The key difference is the load on the body. A Russian banya works through contrast: hot steam room, whisks, then the pond or tub, repeated several times; afterwards you feel rebooted. A hammam barely taxes the heart and blood vessels; its effect is in the skin and in muscles relaxing under the attendant’s hands. That is why people who find steam-room heat too much, and many women looking for skin care, choose a hammam, while those who want to be warmed to the bone choose a Russian banya. What soap massage and kese peeling do
- Kese peeling removes the layer of dead cells that normally stays on the skin for weeks. Afterwards the skin is smooth, breathes better and tans more evenly. It is done on well-steamed skin — otherwise it hurts and does nothing.
- Soap (foam) massage is a light massage through a thick layer of natural soap foam. The soap softens the skin and lifts what the peeling left behind, and the strokes relax the muscles without deep pressure. This is exactly what people mean by the queries “soap massage” and “foam massage”.
- Heat without overheating improves circulation and warms the muscles before massage — which is why in a hammam the massage always comes after the marble slab, never before.
Is there a hammam in Chișinău — and at our complex?
Full hammams with a marble göbek taşı can be counted on one hand in Moldova; usually it is a warm room inside a hotel spa. At our complex in Durlești there is no hammam — we are a bath complex by definition: five wood- and electric-fired baths, a pond and tubs, steam masters. But three of the four things people go to a hammam for are on our bath menu, and they follow the same logic — on a warmed body, after the steam room.

| Honey bath | Steaming with natural honey applied to the skin, 40 minutes | 1000 MDL |

How to build a “hammam visit” at Woloshin banya
- Come to Dragon in a quiet slot — weekday mornings, or Purple Dragon between 15:00 and 17:00.
- Do not force the first 30–40 minutes: a warm shower, the clay Tripolie bath with its soft steam, rest by the pond with the hot spring. That is your “warm room”.
- Kese peeling or a scrub — only once the skin is properly steamed.
- The soap-and-lime-bark wash right after the peeling, while the pores are open.
- A warm herbal tub or tea in the lounge. The cold pond is optional — a hammam does not require it.
- If you want a massage, take the 30-minute classic (500 MDL) or hot stones; after the soap wash the muscles are already soft.
For two people the same scenario is more comfortable in private Valhalla or the intimate Forest: your own steam room, your own tub and nobody around. Book treatments in advance — the number of masters per shift is limited. Book online or call +373 76 00 57 77.
